Make an observation, not a verdict.
Describe the colour, visible crystal shapes, transparency and surface lustre. “Blue, glassy, blade-shaped crystals” is an observation. “Azurite” is an identification that still needs support.
Use more than colour.
Different minerals can share a colour, and one mineral can appear in many colours. Compare several characteristics in a reliable reference. Hardness values describe scratch resistance; they are not a measure of how safely a specimen can be handled.
Let uncertainty stay visible.
Photographs can guide a comparison but cannot confirm every identification. Keep “unidentified” or “tentative” in your record until the evidence improves. Do not scratch, grind, taste or chemically test an unknown specimen. Ask a qualified mineralogist when identification matters.
